Kerstmis 2013. Christmas 2013.

Het is alweer bijna kerstmis, de quilts zijn gelukkig al af. Dashing Stars, helemaal free motion doorgequilt, een slingertje met sterretjes. Ik ben behoorlijk trots op het resultaat. En een paar kleine kerstpaneeltjes, gewoon voor de lol van het handmatig doorquilten. Daar zijn misschien geen foto's van. Die komen dan nog wel. Want 1 van mijn nieuwe voornemens is om hier vaker te posten. Nog minder vaak kan ook bijna niet, hahaha. Mijn tweede nieuwe voornemen is om een vriendin te helpen met haar workshops. De voorbeelden daarvan komen ook hier.

It's almost Christmastime again. I'm very pleased to have finished the quilts in time. Dashing Stars, all free motion quilted. A little string with stars. I'm pretty proud with the results. And a few small Christmascoupons, just for the fun of quilting by hand. I may not have pictures of those yet, but that being the case, they will follow shortly. Because one of my new years resolutions is to post here more often. Any less would be hard, hahahaha. My second new years resolution is to help a friend with her workshops. The examples will be posted here too.

Quilt naar Veldhoven. Quilt to Veldhoven.

Mijn quilt is geaccepteerd voor de Open Europese Quiltkampioenschappen in Veldhoven. Ik ben helemaal dolgelukkig. Na de tentoonstelling kan ik eindelijk een foto plaatsen. Deze quilt heeft lang nodig gehad om tot een goed einde te komen. Ik probeerde outside the box te denken en dat is moeilijk. En dan daarna mijn idee omzetten in een quilt, nog moeilijker. Maar dat is uiteindelijk gelukt en nu is ie dan geaccepteerd, hoera.

My quilt has been accepted for the Open European Quiltchampionships in Veldhoven. I am extatic. When the exhibition is finished, I can finally post some pictures. This quilt took a long time to get to a good finish. I tried to think outside the box, which is hard. And then convert my idea to a quilt, which is even harder. But I finally nailed it and now it has been accepted. Hurray.

Vakantie Voorbij. Beyond the Holidays.

De zomervakantie is helaas al weer voorbij. Gelukkig kunnen we nog even doorgenieten in de tuin, maar ja, alle tijd doorgebracht in de tuin, zit niet in een quilt. Tijdens de vakantie heb ik wel een heel klein beetje gedaan, maar ik heb meer tijd in de tuin doorgebracht.

The Summerholidays are past tense already. Joyfully, we can still spend nice qualitytime in our yard. Althoughm time spent in the yard, is time not spent on a quilt. Oh well. I still managed to do a little bit while camping, but I spent more time in the yard.

Alvast een voorproefje voor kerstmis. Christmas preview.

Een leuke, snelle manier gezien om deze sterren te maken. Van de drie kleuren leg je steeds combinaties van twee met de goede kant op elkaar. Dus in mijn geval creme met rood, creme met groen en groen met rood. Langs de rand helemaal rondom aan elkaar naaien. Over beide diagonalen doorsnijden. Vier losse creme vierkantjes erbij. Ster alvast leggen. Lapje 1 uit horizontale rij 1 aan lapje 2 uit horizontale rij 1 naaien. Chainpiecen Lapje 1 uit horizontale rij 2 aan lapje 2 uit horizontale rij 2 enz. tot en met lapje 4. Dan niets los knippen en lapje 3 uit horizontale rij 1 aan lapje 2(met 1) uit horizontale rij 1 weer tot en met lapje 4 aan 3(met 2 en 1) van horizontale rij 4. Dan nog steeds niet losknippen, maar geheel draaien, goed kijken of alles  goed ligt en dan de rijen aan elkaar naaien.Doordat alles al aan elkaar zit, hoef je niet te spelden. Een blok zit in een half uurtje in elkaar, met strijken tussendoor en alles.

I've seen a fun and fast way to make these stars. Make combinations of two with your three colours, right sides together. In my case, cream/red, cream/green, red/green. Sew all around the edge. Cut over both diagonals.Four separate cream squares added. Lay out the star. Sew patch 1 from horizontal row 1 to patch 2 from horizontal row 1. Chainpiece patch 1 from horizontal row 2 to patch 2 from horizontal row 2 etc. untill patch 4. No cutting of threads. Sew patch 3 from horizontal row 1 to patch 2 (and 1) from horizontal row 1, untill patch 4 to patch 3(and 2 and 1) from horizontal row 4. Still no cutting threads. Turn the whole thing, make sure everything turned the right direction and sew the rows together. Because everything is already stuck together, there's no need for pinning. One block finished in half an hour, included ironing and everything.

Off the Wall Het Heelal. Off the Wall The Universe.

Leuk idee en toch best tijdrovende techniek uit Intuitive Color en Design, van Jean Wells. Ik heb er ook al een artikel over gezien in een quilttijdschrift, ik weet niet meer precies welk tijdschrift. Als je dat toch graag wil weten, laat even een berichtje achter, dan zoek ik het op.

De techniek is meer dan alleen strookjes aan elkaar naaien. De strookjes worden uit de losse hand gesneden en expres niet helemaal recht, zodat het geheel wat speelser wordt. De off the wall quilt is een quiltje om een schildersdoek gespannen. Je krijgt zo een dikke quilt. Kun je ophangen, maar ook zo in de kast zetten. Erg grappig. Je kunt ze zo ook eens ergens anders neerzetten, ziet de kamer er gelijk weer anders uit.

A nice idea and a slightly timeconsuming technique from Intuitive Color and Design, by Jean Wells. I also read an article about it in a magazine, but I forgot in which one exactly. Should you really want to know, just leave me a message, so I can look into it.

The used technique entails more than just sewing straight pieces together. The pieces are loosely cut without a ruler, not completely straight by choice, to get a more playfull effect. The Off the Wall quilt is a quilt pulled around a painters stretched canvas. It becomes a thick quilt. Nice to hang, or just put in a cupboard or cabinet. Quite funny. It adds a nice touch to the room.

Het kroningsquiltje heeft nog een leuke achterkant. Ik was alleen vergeten hem online te zetten.

Stof verven. Dyeing fabric.

Eindelijk heb ik dan genoeg moed verzameld om stof te verven. De verf van Trapsuutjies had ik misschien al wel drie jaar liggen, maar ik durfde de stap maar niet te zetten. Tot ik op hun website wat las over het verven met behulp van Varens en Zout en Zon. Gisteren was de eerste zonnige dag dat ik ook tijd had, dus meteen aan de gang.

Finally I gathered enougd courage to start dyeing my own fabric. I had the dye just sitting and collecting dust in my cupboard for about three years, but I just couldn't take the first step. Until I read something about dyeing with ferns, salt and sun.

Deze eerste foto's zijn de foto's terwijl de zon de patronen aan het inbranden is en het zout de verf in patronen trekt. De volgende foto's zijn de resultaten.

These first pictures are taken while the sun is burning the patterns in the fabric and the salt is pulling the dye into patterns. The next pictures are the results.
